Amendments to Canada's Citizenship Act
Bill C-6, An Act to Amend the Citizenship Act, received Royal Assent on June 19, 2017. Some changes to the Citizenship Act come into force immediately, while others later in 2017 or in 2018.
Some immediate changes include: the intent to live in Canada once granted citizenship is no longer required; citizenship revocation provisions applying to dual citizens are repealed.
Important changes in the fall of 2017: requirements regarding physical presence in Canada will be reduced to three out of five years; age range for language and knowledge requirements will be confined to 18-54 years old.
