Bill C-6 Amendments to the Citizenship Act coming into force in 2018
Bill C-6, An Act to Amend the Citizenship Act and to make consequential amendments to another Act, received Royal Assent on June 19, 2017.
Some provisions of Bill C-6, took effect on royal assent, others subsequently on October 11, 2017, whereas other provisions are to came into force in 2018.
As of January 11, 2018, the Federal Court is the decision-maker in all revocation of Canadian citizenship cases, unless the individual affected requests that the Minister make the decision.
Other changes expected to take place in 2018 include clear authority under the Citizenship Act for citizenship officers to seize fraudulent or suspected fraudulent documents.
The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced on February 5, 2018, in Ottawa, that the completion of another amendment to the Citizenship Act expresses the Canadian government commitment towards integrating enhanced fairness into the process of revocation of citizenship.
